Finally it has decided to turn Spring here at beautiful Lake Fork, TX. The Largemouth Bass are trying to settle in to a late Spring pattern. Numerous Bass are being caught on main lake points by using crankbaits and Carolina rigged flukes and baby brush hogs. The baby brush hog rigged on a shaky head jig on main lake sub points is also working. We have found the best color of baby brush hog was watermelon/candy. The best crankbait was the KVD 1.5 and 2.5 in either the chartreuse with the black back or the normal silver with a black back (shad color). The best pattern for the crankbait was by using a very erratic retrieve.
Most of the Crappie has arrived back out on the main lake humps, road beds, bridges and trash piles. They were biting best on a pure minnow rig in 18 to 22 foot of water. The jig fishermen were still struggling to catch a limit. If you still insist on using the jig, make sure you tip the jig with a small minnow.
The White Bass are eating every minnow, shad and small crankbait in sight. They too are out on the main lake points early in the morning and around 0900 they move out into 20 to 24 foot of water on old bridges and structure. If you use an Alabama rig, it is nothing to catch 2 to 4 white Bass at a time. I am using the Alabama rig on 65 pound braided line and a 7 1/2 foot stiff action rod for my set up. It really gets exciting sometimes!
The catfish fishermen were rejoicing that the winds were not as bad this week. They were able to stay out on the main lake and tie up to their favorite tree and catch numerous good Catfish. The Punch bait was their favorite bait of choice. Use a #6 treble hook and you can't go wrong.
You Bass fishermen that are in the market for a good new or used Ranger, need to stop into Nichols Marine in Longview, TX and see there great selection of Rangers. For those of you that are tournament fishermen, you need to check out the tremendous Z521. It can do it all! Tell Dana "John sent you". Oh by the way, they have a 5 star service and parts department.
While you are at Lake Fork, stop into Lake Fork Marina and check out their selection of KVD crankbaits and pick up some of those minnows for the Crappie. You can't go wrong.
