The weather had its own version of March madness. Two of the days this week we had winds over 30 miles per hour and cold nights. The result of the cold nights was the water temperatures dropping into the mid to high 50’s. The good news is the nights are going to start to warmer this week which should bring the water temperatures back up. The water clarity remained muddy to heavily stained this week due to the high winds. The Bass fishing also had its ups and downs. The bucks were still up close most of the week but the females backed off into 6 to 10 feet of water. The Lake Fork Trophy Lures Hyper Stick was still a good bait to catch them with. With the stained water we still used chartreuse/pepper and continued used the split shot rig. There is slight twist to all of this, since the females moved out to the 6 to 10 foot range we went back to the Carolina rig and still used the Hyper Stick. No matter which method that you are using, make sure you fish it very, very slowly. The Rod and reel combinations we used this week continued to be the Duckett Ghost rods and ABU Garcia Orra SX reels lined with 17 pound Stren line.
The White Bass are still in the creeks but have moved off to the deeper channels. You can find them around the bases of deep stumps. With the falling water temperatures the minnow rig is the best way to catch them.
Now the Crappies are a whole different story. They are scattered in most of the creeks on the lake. The crappies are in 2 to 4 feet of water trying to spawn. You have to keep on the move with the minnow rig hitting all the little brush piles and stumps. Be patient and you will find them.
Lake Fork is really getting beautiful with the spring colors coming on. While you are at beautiful Lake Fork make sure you stop into Lake Fork Marina and check the great tackle selection and make sure you check out the Duckett rods they have in stock.
