Lake Fork Fishing Report for September 22, 2015

It was a great week on Lake Fork TX. The water clarity continues to get better and the water temperatures were 82 to 84 degrees. The Big Bass Splash was on tap this week with around 3400 anglers trying for the top prize of a new Triton boat and a new Dodge truck. The lucky angler caught a 9.48 pound Bass to capture the top prize. A large amount of Bass were caught on everything from plastic worms to deep running crankbaits. Most of the Bass were caught from 2 feet of water to 20 feet of water. The bigger fish were caught off of main lake points with baits like the Strike King XD6 and the Carolina rigged Lake Fork Trophy Lures Hyper Stick. I would like to talk to for a minute about a bait and Bait Company that I think is on the leading Edge of fishing technology. The name of the company is Tightlines UV. They have a new line of baits called “Whiskers” Series. They are using UV technology to enhance the fish to be able to see baits at all depths. The Whiskers that they have added to their baits has added so much more action to soft baits from worms, creatures and swim baits that no other company can come close to. Pros from Scott Martin to Joe Thomas are really sold on them! I will have more on the UV Whisker baits in the coming weeks.

The White Bass are driving the Crappie fishermen crazy. They can be caught in 18 to 24 feet of water with Joes Spaits chrome and blue jigging spoon or his chrome and blue flutter spoon. Plus, if you are Crappie fishing and you put on one of Joes baby blue/chartreuse Crappie jigs, you will also catch the White Bass.

The Crappie fishing was slow again this week. The water temperature did not drop as much as I hoped. The white/chartreuse Crappie jig tipped with a minnow was good combination this week. Look for them in 18 to 20 foot over brush piles.
No report on Catfish this week.

“News”……..The Triton Owners Bass Tournament is this week. The date is 26th of September and the location is at Lake Fork Marina. It is a Team Tournament. See Triton’s web site for details.

Fishing Report from TPWD (Apr. 24)

GOOD. Water Stained; 60 degrees; 0.20 feet above pool. Bass have slowed, but post spawners are setting up on points in 5-7 feet of water with Carolina rigged creature baits. Topwaters and frogs are good early morning around grass. Shaky heads are good around boat houses. Report by Marc Mitchell, Lake Fork Guide Service. Report by Guide Alex Guthrie, Fly Fish Fork Guide Service. Changing weather means changing bite. First phase spawners are now in a post spawn pattern and aggressive. Frog pattern top waters are excellent in the grass and brush. Casting into the pockets and letting the frog sit for a few seconds is a good idea. Crappies are shallow, catching them on edge of banks, small fish patterns like wooly buggers are a good bet. Bream are beginning to make themselves known in the shallows, wooly buggers and small poppers should bring a strike.Crappie are good in 2-13 feet on timber and around grass lines. Some fish are moving back out into the 12-18 feet areas and a little deeper. Black crappie are on a few bridges, but fish are not loaded up yet. Black crappie are also grouping under docks on sunny afternoons. Cast 1/16th ounce hand tied jigs continue to be good in white and gray, white and chartreuse and light blue and gray colors. Minnows will still work very well and especially on shallow fish around grass. Soft plastics will also work well as the fish have been very aggressive. We should see the aggressive bite until the warmer months get here and the fish get a little finicky. Catfishing continues to be good around timber where birds are roosting in 10-18 feet. Also getting reports of some shallow catfish around grass lines and sea walls. Those fish are most likely chasing shad spawns. Catfish are cruising around shallow wood in 6-12 feet, with lots of fry showing up. Use your favorite prepared catfish bait to load the boat once you locate the fish. Report by Jacky Wiggins, Jacky Wiggins Guide Service.
