Getting your kids involved in fishing can get them hooked on a lifelong passion; teach them environmental responsibility and build strong family relationships.
The most enjoyable thing about fishing with kids is getting a glimpse of the world as they see it. Sharing the sport of fishing is an excellent opportunity to get back to the simplicity of life and just have fun.
You don’t have to be a fishing Hall of Famer to get your kids interested in the sport. In fact, you don’t have to know anything about fishing. We are getting really good at outsourcing knowledge. Outsource the knowledge and skill of fishing, too. Of course there are considerations before you get on the water.
1. Make it enjoyable. Fish for species that have generous size and catch limits. Lake Fork has liberal numbers of largemouth bass and crappie.
2. Introduce kids to catch-and-release. Allowing fish to live for future fishing teaches them to be good stewards of our resources.
3. Daytrips are good. Keep it short. A half day trip is long enough to have a good time and short enough not to overwhelm younger attention spans.
4. Supervise practice with tackle. Safety first. A knowledgeable and professional guide comes in handy in teaching kids how to cast, water safety and the biology of fish. You can concentrate on making memories.
There are no barriers to enjoying fishing. Girls and boys can enjoy the sport, it is not gender specific. Moms can enjoy the bond formed sharing the sport of fishing as easily as Dads and Grandpas.
Physical coordination is not a deal breaker and you don’t have to be in shape to fish. No one ever missed a Monday of work from weekend warrior heroics fishing.
Most professional fishing guides are knowledgeable, friendly and love kids. Fishing guides know how important it is to you to give your little fishing buddies an experience that will make a lasting impression.
