Lake Fork guides, Rick Loomis and Dave Parsons volunteering at the 2nd Annual Texas-Oklahoma Patriot Shootout (TOPS) bass fishing competition

Bass fishing pros Gary Klein, Jeff Kriet, Bryon Velvick, Cheryl Bowden, Judith Hart, Scott Dean, Gene Eisenmann and many others, paired with their competing military team member, will see who can bring in the biggest catch - an Oklahoma or Texas team. The 2nd Annual TOPS Bass Fishing Competition launches the morning of June 8 from Westlake Park on Lewisville Lake. A part of SummerFest on the Lake, the competition is for our military service members, veterans, and their families. Al Telese, LTC, US Army (Ret), Founder, President & CEO of Networking Warriors of America, says, "Fishing is great outdoor therapy. It provides an opportunity for the soldier to get in touch with the community, to relax and to get away from the chaos of their lives." Military warriors and veterans from Texas and Oklahoma will compete to win their state's 2013 Lewisville Lake Bass fishing bragging rights. For the competition Oklahoma and Texas soldiers will be paired with top Triton Boat pros and other fishing pros. While the soldiers are fishing, their families will enjoy fun activities at the park and throughout the day at Summerfest. "Fishing is a time for the soldiers to forget the world for a while -- to forget about medical problems and their day-to-day challenges," Bob LaMarch, Bassin' Guide Service and longtime supporter explained. "All they have to think about is their next cast, next lure and next fish," he continued. Event sponsors, Networking Warriors of America, Operation Once in a Lifetime, Northstar Bank of Texas, Triton boats, the US Army Corps of Engineers, and the Town of Hickory Creek, invite everyone to join the launch event at 6:30 a.m. and then enjoy Summerfest activities along with the TOPS weigh-in and awards celebration at 1:30 p.m. North Texas Marine, Cabella's Allen, Lake Fork Trophy Lures, Carlisle Transportation, Bassin' Guide Service, Lake Dallas Diner and Wynne Sedan & Limo Transportation are also supporters of the event. Mike Simpson, North Texas Marine's sales associate commented, "It is an opportunity to thank our soldiers and tell them how much they mean to us, how much we appreciate what they have done for us and how lucky we are to have them in our lives." Bud Light Trail is sponsoring the weigh-in. Bryan Davis, Director of Tournaments, said, "We are proud to help support all of our warriors and look forward to a great competition." Many of the fishing pros will be available after the weigh-in for photos and autographs. Tom Bont, Parks Board Chairman for the Town of Hickory Creek, summed up the reason they have been and continue to be a major event sponsor, "It is an opportunity for the soldiers and families to enjoy what they can do, not what they can't and for us to thank them for their service." All expenses including travel, lodging, meals, entertainment, etc., are taken care of for the soldiers and veterans and their families during the competition. Fishing Report from TPWD (May 7)

GOOD. Water Stained; 73 degrees; 0.73 feet below pool. Good early morning bass bite around shad spawn areas and with topwater frogs over grass. Midday to mid afternoon work flukes and yum dingers around grass good1-3 feet. New wave of spawners pulling up this week. Carolina rigs fair in 5-10 feet of water on secondary points. Report by Marc Mitchell, Lake Fork Guide Service. Black bass are post spawn and the top water bite is on! Frog patterns are working in the shallow vegetation. The crappie are moving shallow, small clousers are producing well. Large bream have moved shallow, wooly buggers are producing good fish. Channel catfish are cruising 2-4 feet biting clousers. Report by Guide Alex Guthrie, Fly Fish Fork Guide Service. Crappie fishing is settling into the post spawn and summer patterns we should see for the next few months. We are seeing incredible numbers of small black crappie right now loading up on brush piles, lay downs, bridges and docks. The larger black crappie are a little hard to find but you can find some nice groups of them or pick a few out of the smaller fish. The bigger white crappie are beginning to load on the summer pattern trees. We have a tremendous amount of fry covering up a lot of those trees and making it very hard to see those bigger white crappie on forward facing sonar or for them to see your bait. You can find fish in 10-30 feet of water and some may only be 2 feet under the surface or right on the bottom. Minnows and any colored jigs are both producing extremely well. Report by Jacky Wiggins, Jacky Wiggins Guide Service.
