Lake Fork Fishing Report for October 25, 2016

Well fall is here and the weather patterns will be changing on a regular basis. This week had brisk north winds only to see the winds changing to the south on Saturday. What does that mean for the fishermen here at Lake Fork? Well you will have to be really flexible on what fishing techniques you will able to use and where you can fish including what ramps to use to safely launch your boat. Point in fact; when the north winds were howling on Wednesday and Thursday I put down my wacky worm rod and picked up my Duckett 7 foot 3 inch Texas rig worm rod and fished a Zoom watermelon/red Mag II worm and continued to catch fish. The Santone swim jig also worked very well as the water temperatures started to fall. On Saturday the winds switched back to the south which allowed us to return to the wacky worm technique. We however did change colors of Zoom trick worms from chartreuse/pumpkin to California 420 that we were using to wacky rig with. It is noted that a lot of small fish are being caught on a drop shot rig in the timber near old pad fields. Our equipment list this week included Duckett Ghost rods, ABU Garcia Orra SX reels, Zoom Mag II worms, Zoom Trick worms and Santone jigs.

The White Bass are still spread out and that is due to the water temperatures still being in the mid 70’s. We did manage to catch a few on Joe Spaits chrome with red eyes Flashtail spoon. 18 foot creek channels are a good place to look for them.

The Crappie fishing continues to get better. Numerous good Crappies are being caught on mylar with orange tail 1/16 ounce Crappie jigs. They are starting to really relate to brush piles in 11 to 18 foot of water. Have fun!

The Catfish fishermen had tough time in the middle of the week due to the north winds. They did better on Friday and Saturday in 22 to 28 foot of water using punch bait and cut bait around baited trees.

Now that all of the major tournaments are over for the year Lake Fork Marina is continuing to get new product every day. It ranges from new tackle to new clothing items. While you are at Lake Fork make sure you stop in a Lake Fork Marina and see all of the new changes.

Fishing Report from TPWD (May 8)

GOOD. Water Stained; 70 degrees; 0.41 feet above pool. Bass are fair early morning on topwaters and frogs around grass. Bass are good on shaky heads at the edge of grass in 3-5 feet, or Carolina rigs on points and secondary points in 5-8 feet. Report by Marc Mitchell, Lake Fork Guide Service. Black bass are in a post spawn pattern and aggressive. Top waters are excellent in the shallow grass, streamers are working in the shallow banks. Crappies are shallow catching them on the edge of banks, small fish patterns like wooly buggers are a good bet. Bream are excellent in the shallows, wooly buggers and small poppers should bring a strike. Report by Guide Alex Guthrie, Fly Fish Fork Guide Service. The crappie fishing on Lake Fork has been up and down this past week with the heavy rains and big winds. We had super muddy conditions in areas where we had creek runoff pouring in. It took a few days for the water in those areas to clear back up enough for the bite to pick up. We are finally seeing some black crappie loading up on certain laydowns and docks. If you find the right ones you can load the boat quickly. Seeing a few brush piles in certain areas loading up with white crappie. You can still find white crappie on timber in 10-18ft and we should see more moving out deeper over the next few weeks as all spawning comes to an end. We did see a lot of roaming open water fish as well this past week. Maybe this could have been due to the heavy mud and silt in the water. The crappie may not have needed to get on cover even with the bright sunshine with so much in the water stopping the light penetration. When you find crappie in the clearer water the bite has been good. Hand tied jigs in natural minnow colors are working great. Blues, grays and greens are working in the clear water areas around mid lake. Dark green and orange and dark green and chartreuse was working in the muddy water areas. Soft plastics will produce well in similar colors. Minnows are always a good bait t
