The bass fishing continues to be good here on Lake Fork for numbers of small schooling bass. If you're looking to only catch a trophy bass, September is not the best month to come to Lake Fork. But if you're looking for numbers and schooling action, it can be good. September is a very tricky month... the lake will start to turn over with the weather cooling down and it can make the fishing tough, after the turnover the bigger bass will start showing up. If you are planning a trip in the next two or three months, mid October and November is our best fall fishing! Also, there is a lot of tournaments here on the weekends in September. If you're not fishing these tournaments, it's not a good time to plan your trip.The big bass splash is September 16th , 17th, and 18th. There are over 2000 people in this tournament.. I even stay off the lake those 3 days.
We are already starting to see some changes in the weather, and with the recent rain storms that have been popping up just about every other day, conditions are starting to cool down a bit. We are catching good numbers of bass most are small but, you can load the boat right now, if you’re in the right place when these bass come up schooling. The water temp at the time of this report was about 83 degrees on the main lake. In the last few days both shallow and deep patterns are working. The shallow bite has been good, working the edge of the grass lines early. The best bait for me has been a Wacky Worm, Watermelon & June Bug. They have been the best colors for me. By mid morning the bass are starting to school and the best bait to catch these schooling bass for me, has been a ¼ oz. Chrome and Blue Rat-L-Trap and a ¼ oz Little George. You can cover all depths with this bait. When these bass go down, I am also using a Smoking Shad Fluke on a ¼ oz. Jig Head. Most of our bigger bass have come on the Fluke.
When the schooling slows down, I have been going to the Carolina Rig. Best depth has been 15 to 20 feet on main lake and secondary points. Best bait for me on the Carolina Rig has been a Watermelon Red Boss Hog and a Watermelon Seed Centipede. I am using a three foot leader with a 1oz weight, 15 pound line. Good places to try are the mouths of the major creeks, Chaney Branch, Wolf, the SRA point, Hobbs Point, and the old 2946. 515 east and west road beds are producing good numbers of bass. We are catching 25 to 30 bass a day, using the above pattern. The fishing will continue to get even better as we head into October and November Fall Season. Look for there to be a lot of small bass up close to the grass, while most of the bigger bass are still in deeper water for now. As conditions cool down over the next few weeks, the bigger bass will start to move up and feed on big schools of shad.
