Lake Fork Fishing Report for April 16, 2014

Blow wind blow! This week we saw a lot of wind but the temperatures were pleasant for this time of year. The water temperatures ranged from 59 to 66 degrees and the fish are continuing to move into the spawning areas. Lake Fork Trophy Lures Hyper Stick (watermelon/red), split shot rigged, was a hard rig to beat. Some fish were being caught on white spinner baits and chatter baits. The Alabama rig was also very productive in 4 to 6 feet of water just off the edges of the spawning areas on the south end of the lake. This week we continued to use the Ardent Apex reels with the Denny Brauer Signature rods to catch our trophy sized Lake Fork Bass. Several 6 to 9 pound Bass were caught on these rod and reel combinations.
The White Bass have started to migrate into the creeks. Minnows in 6 to 8 foot of water around sharp bends in the creek channels and ditches are the place to look for them. Very tiny white spinner baits will also work.

Crappie fishermen are still having fun in the shallow water of beautiful Lake Fork. We found that 2 to 4 feet worked the best for big slabs. The minnow rig with the slip cork was the best way to catch them.

The Catfish were moving in and out. Chopped chicken livers and minnows worked the best in 4 to 7 foot of water.
Lake Fork Marina carries a great supply of the Ardent rods and reels like we used this week at a great price. They also have a good selection of chatter baits and spinner baits. For you live bait fishermen, make sure you stop into Lake Fork Marina and pick up some minnows to catch some of our large crappie.

May post spawn fishing is great here on Lake Fork. We still have several days open for guided fishing trips in May and June. Give us a call here at J & M Guide Service, Toll Free: 1-888-454-7037 or E-mail us at: [email protected] . Have a safe fishing week.

Lake Fork

Fishing Report from TPWD (May 1)

GOOD. Water Stained; 60 degrees; 0.67 feet above pool. Lake Fork flood gates are open which can make the bite tough. The best bite has been on shaky heads and Carolina rigs on main lake points and secondary points in 5-8 feet of water. Squarebill crankbaits are catching a few in the same areas. Frog bite is slow over flooded grass. Yum dingers are fair at the edge of the grass 2-4 feet. Report by Marc Mitchell, Lake Fork Guide Service. Report by Guide Alex Guthrie, Fly Fish Fork Guide Service. The crappie fishing on Lake Fork has been great this week if you find the right areas and patterns to fish. The spawn is coming to an end and the black crappie are beginning to load up on certain bridges and docks. If you search you can find some big schools of keeper size black crappie. We have had to battle heavy rains, terrible winds and even thunderstorms lately a lot. Hopefully we will see more stable weather conditions over the next few weeks. You can still find some larger white crappie on timber in 10-22ft. Also seeing some white crappie loading up on certain brush in some areas close to where they spawned. Jigs and minnows are both producing well right now and should stay the same until around June or July. Catfishing is still hot on Lake Fork. Baited holes in 12-20ft along creek channels are doing great for channel cats. Use cattle cubes or sour grain to get them to hold in one spot. Then use any prepared catfish bait or cut shad to load the boat with eater sized catfish. Report by Jacky Wiggins, Jacky Wiggins Guide Service.
