Lake Fork Guide Fishing Report 3.13.13

Welcome to lake Fork Surface temps are varying from 52 in the morning to 59 in the afternoon depending on part of the lake your on. The water gets warmer and another cold front comes through. There are several bass on the beds in a few areas already and with warmer temps forcasted for the rest of the week we will see the first large wave of fish start to get on in the warmer spawning areas. The fishing has been off and on from day to day lately with the fronts coming in and out. With the warmer temps coming now I think it's about to bust loose out there!! There are several ways to catch them right now. Lots of fish in different stages but we have concentrating on the very shallow water in 2" to 7" of water. Shaky heads, light weight short c-rigs, jigs ,texas rigs, wacky rigs and drop shots will all work on most days with soft plastics. If throwing a wacky rig I suggest you try Bayou Tackles Wacky Wedge hook. This small weighted hook in 1/16 or 1/8 oz. works great on trick worms or senko type stick baits. Just experiment on all these type baits mentioned above and see what presentation they want on that particular day or the area your fishing in . On real windy days shallow square bill cranks in reds and oranges or shad colors and white or white and chartreuse spinnerbaits will work well around timber. Green pumpkin lightly tipped with chartreuse in the stained water and watermelon seed and watermelon red has worked for us in the more clear water. You really don't need to change or try a lot of different colors right now. Location of the fish is the main key .The warmer water you find the better it willl be at this time of Spring where there is just 2 degrees in surface temps can make a difference in the bite. With the lack of grass a lot of fish will spawn not only on regular spawning flats adjacent to creek channels or deeper water drops but also in the tree roots on some of the long extended main lake shallow points and secondary points. On your spawning flats key on north or northwest banks or pockets for these type areas are the warmest . With the water about to warm up good now thru April is going to be some awesome shallow water spawn fishing and there will be a lot of big fish caught ! Hope these tips will help you catch a few more fish.!I don't have any dates left in March but do have some great days in April left . Fishing Report from TPWD (May 28)

GOOD. Water Stained; 73 degrees; 0.32 feet above pool. The shad are still spawning on main lake points. Target bass feeding on the shad early in the morning with square bill crankbaits, chatterbaits, spinnerbaits, and topwaters. Shaky heads in 3-6 feet are good on points and the edge of grass around bream beds. Carolina rigs are good 12-15 feet on points and road beds. Deep diving crankbait bite is starting to pick up over deep water jumps in 22 feet. Report by Marc Mitchell, Lake Fork Guide Service. Lily fields are filling in, and hydrilla and milfoil are reaching for the surface. Fish this type of cover at mid day when bass are seeking cover. Frog patterns are working in the shallow vegetation early and late. Drop a clouser on isolated cover for black bass. Large bream have moved shallow, wooly buggers are producing good fish. Channel catfish are cruising 2-4 feet, clousers are a good choice. Report by Guide Alex Guthrie, Fly Fish Fork Guide Service. Crappie fishing on Lake Fork is a lot of fun right now. The lake has a tremendous population of black crappie and they are stacked up on all kinds of structures all over the lake in 12-28 feet. White crappie are also loading up on certain trees. You can find black crappie on some bridges, underwater bridges, roadbeds, brush piles, lay downs, tire reefs, points and the base of timber. I have seen some lay downs the past week that may have over 1000 crappie on them. The only problem is finding black crappie over 10 inches when you have so many fish on spots. It is a lot of fun to catch hundreds of crappie per day even if you cannot keep all of them. One of the hottest spots for numbers right now is the big reef in front of the 154 public ramp. Any electronics will find it straight out from the ramp just before the boat lane. It’s very large and easily visible on traditional electronics. The bottom is covered with structures of different kinds and crappie. You can fish minnows just off the bottom or swim small jigs just
