Lake Fork Fishing Report for April 30, 2014

It has been a windy week here on Lake Fork. However, the Bass bit well. The water temperatures ranged from 69 to 74 degrees. In the mornings before the wind got 20+ miles an hour out of the south we caught many really good Bass on points and sub-points a joining the main lake areas. Three main patterns were the key to catching these great Lake Fork Bass. The first was a Carolina rig using a Zoom Baby Brush Hog. Second, was using a crankbaits that run in the 4 to 8 foot range. Model A Bomber worked best for us. Third of all was the Alabama rig, using the Berkley Pearl Red Eye Shad as trailers. The rod and reel combinations that we used this week were Ardent Apex Tournament reels coupled with the Denny Brauer Signature rods. They have all the power you need hauling in these giant Lake Fork Bass.

The White Bass and Yellow Bass were not as aggressive this week. The jigging spoon in 12 to 14 foot of water worked the best. The Alabama rig also worked.

We are finding the Crappie are moving back into 6 to 8 foot of water on the nearby creek channels. I found that the straight minnow rig seemed to work the best.

The Catfish are still spawning in 2 to 5 feet of water. Cut bait still worked the best. Several large Catfish were caught on trout lines using shad and cut bait. Some cat’s weighing up to 50 pounds were caught.

Warm weather is here. That means look out for signs of dehydration. Make sure you drink plenty of water during the day. Plus make sure you wear that life vest while running with that big motor.

Lake Fork Marina has a good selection of crankbaits and has all the water you need to get you through the warm Spring and Summer days here at Lake Fork.

Here at J & M Guide Service we are in the post spawn mode. We have several days open guided fishing trips in May and June for post Spawn Bass. We are also opening up for White Bass trips from now to the end of august. Give us a call: (Toll Free) 1-888-454-7037 or E-mail us at: [email protected] Have a safe fishing week.

Fishing Report from TPWD (May 7)

GOOD. Water Stained; 73 degrees; 0.73 feet below pool. Good early morning bass bite around shad spawn areas and with topwater frogs over grass. Midday to mid afternoon work flukes and yum dingers around grass good1-3 feet. New wave of spawners pulling up this week. Carolina rigs fair in 5-10 feet of water on secondary points. Report by Marc Mitchell, Lake Fork Guide Service. Black bass are post spawn and the top water bite is on! Frog patterns are working in the shallow vegetation. The crappie are moving shallow, small clousers are producing well. Large bream have moved shallow, wooly buggers are producing good fish. Channel catfish are cruising 2-4 feet biting clousers. Report by Guide Alex Guthrie, Fly Fish Fork Guide Service. Crappie fishing is settling into the post spawn and summer patterns we should see for the next few months. We are seeing incredible numbers of small black crappie right now loading up on brush piles, lay downs, bridges and docks. The larger black crappie are a little hard to find but you can find some nice groups of them or pick a few out of the smaller fish. The bigger white crappie are beginning to load on the summer pattern trees. We have a tremendous amount of fry covering up a lot of those trees and making it very hard to see those bigger white crappie on forward facing sonar or for them to see your bait. You can find fish in 10-30 feet of water and some may only be 2 feet under the surface or right on the bottom. Minnows and any colored jigs are both producing extremely well. Report by Jacky Wiggins, Jacky Wiggins Guide Service.
