Lake Fork Fishing Report for March 24, 2018

It was a warm windy week here at Lake Fork, TX. The water temperatures are in the mid 60’s and the water clarity is stained. The Bass fishing is picking up as the water temperatures improve. It was a good week to fish the split shot rig with a Zoom watermelon/red fluke. Of course, we dyed the tail of the fluke chartreuse! I know everybody is tired of me saying, “slow down”. However, that was the trick of fishing the fluke this week. I have kept a new bait and color called a Boss Hog in watermelon candy red a secret for some time until I had time to play and test it. It works great! It is made by Buddy’s Custom Baits here at Lake Fork, TX. You need to fish it on a ¼-ounce shaky head jig. The only way I have modified it is by dying the tails chartreuse. Fish it in 2 to 6 foot of water and hold on! On our equipment list this week was our Ranger 520c powered by a Mercury 250 Pro X, Duckett rods, ABU Garcia reels, Stren line, Zoom soft plastics and Buddy’s Custom Baits.

The Crappie bite was on this week. The Crappie have moved into the shallow water to spawn. The minnow rig was best way to catch them. When you catch one you will catch several.

The White Bass bite was also very good this week. You can catch them on Bubba’s Bait white with an orange tail Crappie, tipped with a minnow. They are in 4 to 6 feet of water on sandy flats in the back of creeks.

The Catfish bite is picking up. Cut bait worked the best in 12 to 16 foot of water around creek channel bends.

The Bass spawn is here. I have a few days open for guided Bass trips in April, so give us a call at (903) 413-6919 or E-mail us at [email protected]. Have a safe fishing week.

Fishing Report from TPWD (May 1)

GOOD. Water Stained; 60 degrees; 0.67 feet above pool. Lake Fork flood gates are open which can make the bite tough. The best bite has been on shaky heads and Carolina rigs on main lake points and secondary points in 5-8 feet of water. Squarebill crankbaits are catching a few in the same areas. Frog bite is slow over flooded grass. Yum dingers are fair at the edge of the grass 2-4 feet. Report by Marc Mitchell, Lake Fork Guide Service. Report by Guide Alex Guthrie, Fly Fish Fork Guide Service. The crappie fishing on Lake Fork has been great this week if you find the right areas and patterns to fish. The spawn is coming to an end and the black crappie are beginning to load up on certain bridges and docks. If you search you can find some big schools of keeper size black crappie. We have had to battle heavy rains, terrible winds and even thunderstorms lately a lot. Hopefully we will see more stable weather conditions over the next few weeks. You can still find some larger white crappie on timber in 10-22ft. Also seeing some white crappie loading up on certain brush in some areas close to where they spawned. Jigs and minnows are both producing well right now and should stay the same until around June or July. Catfishing is still hot on Lake Fork. Baited holes in 12-20ft along creek channels are doing great for channel cats. Use cattle cubes or sour grain to get them to hold in one spot. Then use any prepared catfish bait or cut shad to load the boat with eater sized catfish. Report by Jacky Wiggins, Jacky Wiggins Guide Service.
