Lake Fork Fishing Report for May 23, 2016

Another beautiful week to fish Lake Fork Texas! The water temperatures remained in the upper 70’s and the water clarity continues to improve. Bass fishing remained fair most of the week with the Carolina rig being the dominate way to catch them. The top water bite was also pretty good this week with the over cast sky’s staying around a little longer in the mornings. Several good fish were being taken on the drop shot rig in 15 to 19 foot of water. Now for the Carolina rig; we primarily used the watermelon/red Zoom Baby Hog with chartreuse dyed tails in 12 to 16 foot of water. Main lake points were our primary places to find both the Carolina rig and the drop shot rig bass. The Frog and the Chug Bug were our lures of choice for the top water bite. Fish the frog over the grass and lily pads and the chug bug along the edges of the grass and willows trees. Our rod and reel combinations for this week continued to be Duckett rods with ABU Garcia Orra SX reels, “killer combination”.

The White bass are ever where. Look for them on main lake humps that have old brush piles on them. The best water depth was 22 to 24 foot of water. You can catch them until you get tired of catching them. Use Joe Spaits silver (chrome) ½ ounce Flashtail spoon. Parents now that school is about out, take the kids and fish for these White Bass will have a ball!

The Crappie fishing continues to pick up after their spawn. More and more Crappies are starting to show up on the bridges and out on the deeper brush piles. Minnows are you best bet right now to put good numbers of Crappies in the boat. The best water depth is 18 to 21 feet.

Once again the Catfish fishermen are enjoying themselves with good numbers of Catfish being caught on troutlines, jugs and rods and reels. The troutliner’s are using cut bait and the folks that are using the rod and reel are using punch bait. Baited trees are still your best bet!

While you are at beautiful Lake Fork, TX, make sure you stop in to Lake Fork Marina and check out their large selection of the hottest baits for Lake Fork. Also check out the great selection of the great Duckett rods.

Fishing Report from TPWD (May 1)

GOOD. Water Stained; 60 degrees; 0.67 feet above pool. Lake Fork flood gates are open which can make the bite tough. The best bite has been on shaky heads and Carolina rigs on main lake points and secondary points in 5-8 feet of water. Squarebill crankbaits are catching a few in the same areas. Frog bite is slow over flooded grass. Yum dingers are fair at the edge of the grass 2-4 feet. Report by Marc Mitchell, Lake Fork Guide Service. Report by Guide Alex Guthrie, Fly Fish Fork Guide Service. The crappie fishing on Lake Fork has been great this week if you find the right areas and patterns to fish. The spawn is coming to an end and the black crappie are beginning to load up on certain bridges and docks. If you search you can find some big schools of keeper size black crappie. We have had to battle heavy rains, terrible winds and even thunderstorms lately a lot. Hopefully we will see more stable weather conditions over the next few weeks. You can still find some larger white crappie on timber in 10-22ft. Also seeing some white crappie loading up on certain brush in some areas close to where they spawned. Jigs and minnows are both producing well right now and should stay the same until around June or July. Catfishing is still hot on Lake Fork. Baited holes in 12-20ft along creek channels are doing great for channel cats. Use cattle cubes or sour grain to get them to hold in one spot. Then use any prepared catfish bait or cut shad to load the boat with eater sized catfish. Report by Jacky Wiggins, Jacky Wiggins Guide Service.
