Lake Fork Fishing Report for October 7, 2013

Fall fishing is quickly approaching. The air and water temperatures are starting to come down. The fish are starting to move up from the deep water (18 to 30 feet) to 2 to 8 feet. The Bass fishing has started to really pick up using several different styles of baits. The most productive way was the Texas rigged Lake Fork Trophy Lures 8 inch ring worm or the Berkley 10 inch power worm, both in the blue fleck color. Don't forget to work that worm very slow and a 3/16 ounce weight is the heaviest weight that you want to use. The second best pattern was the little crankkbait. We found that the Berkley Sabile Action First and the Strike King KVD 1.5 crankbaits really worked the best. The natural shad color was the best producer. The third best producer was the Zoom finesse worm rigged wacky style. This style worked well around the lily pads and grass. We liked the chartreuse/pumpkin color the best. The White Bass seemed to be a little scattered out this week. They were still relating to old creek bends and humps. They also have moved up in the water column. The most productive water depth was 18 to 20 feet. Yes, Joe's Flutter spoon still was the best bait to use. We did notice that not only did the chrome and chartreuse work but the chrome and silver started to work also. I blame this on the water starting to clear up is some areas of the lake. The Crappie fishermen were enjoying a good week of fishing. The better Crappie were being taken on large minnows around bridges. The Crappie were being taken around all the bridges but the 515 East and West were the best. The Catfish were eating very well. They were being caught in 28 to 32 feet of water on baited trees around creek bends. Punch bait and chicken livers were the best baits to use. Guys and gals the Berkley Bass Tournament is just around the corner. Lake Fork Marina has a very large selection of Berkley products for you to catch those Lake Fork lunkers with. This includes Berkley soft plastics, jigs and Sebile Action First (Berkley) crankbaits and spinnerbaits. So stop in and talk to the friendly staff and pick up your Berkley products for the upcoming tournament. Say do you need a boat to fish all the fall bass tournaments with and can handle all the wind the Mother Nature can throw at you? You need to stop into Nichols Marine in Longview TX and check out the 2013 Raspberry colored Ranger Z522. It is powered by a Yamaha 250 SHO and has a Minnkota Fortrex 101 US2 36 volt trolling motor. It also has a Lowrance HDS 8 in the console and a HDS 5 in the Bow. Some of the other options are: Hot foot, blinker trim, bucket seat option, Ranger cover and more. What a beautiful rig! By the way, they have the best Marine Parts and Service department in the state of Texas. They are only ones that I let service my equipment. Fishing Report from TPWD (May 7)

GOOD. Water Stained; 73 degrees; 0.73 feet below pool. Good early morning bass bite around shad spawn areas and with topwater frogs over grass. Midday to mid afternoon work flukes and yum dingers around grass good1-3 feet. New wave of spawners pulling up this week. Carolina rigs fair in 5-10 feet of water on secondary points. Report by Marc Mitchell, Lake Fork Guide Service. Black bass are post spawn and the top water bite is on! Frog patterns are working in the shallow vegetation. The crappie are moving shallow, small clousers are producing well. Large bream have moved shallow, wooly buggers are producing good fish. Channel catfish are cruising 2-4 feet biting clousers. Report by Guide Alex Guthrie, Fly Fish Fork Guide Service. Crappie fishing is settling into the post spawn and summer patterns we should see for the next few months. We are seeing incredible numbers of small black crappie right now loading up on brush piles, lay downs, bridges and docks. The larger black crappie are a little hard to find but you can find some nice groups of them or pick a few out of the smaller fish. The bigger white crappie are beginning to load on the summer pattern trees. We have a tremendous amount of fry covering up a lot of those trees and making it very hard to see those bigger white crappie on forward facing sonar or for them to see your bait. You can find fish in 10-30 feet of water and some may only be 2 feet under the surface or right on the bottom. Minnows and any colored jigs are both producing extremely well. Report by Jacky Wiggins, Jacky Wiggins Guide Service.
