Lake Fork Fishing Report for September 5, 2016

What a great week to fish Lake Fork. This week we had some rain that kept the water temperatures down in the mid 80’s. The water clarity did not change much this week, with the creeks remaining stained and the main lake lightly stained. What did change is the Bass fishing! The Bass fishing was very good this with the best bite remaining in the shallow water. The chartreuse/pumpkin Zoom Trick worm rigged wacky style was once again the top producer. With the Hydrilla making a comeback the Bass are starting to relate to it. That is way the nail in the wacky set up is critical. The wacky rigged worm must get down into the Hydrilla for it to be effective. The watermelon/red Carolina rigged Zoom Baby Brush Hog was also a good producer this week. I did move into 8 to 12 foot of water and went from a ¾ ounce weight to a ½ ounce weight and slowed down to a very slow retrieve. I did notice in the highly stained creeks the Strike King 1.5 square bill crankbait started working early in the morning. The best colored 1.5 was the chartreuse with black back. On our equipment list for this week was the Duckett Ghost rods with ABU Garcia Orra SX reels lined with Stren original 17 pound test line. Oh yes, don’t forget the Zoom Trick worms, Baby Brush Hogs and Strike King 1.5 square bill crankbaits.

The White Bass a still scattered out over most parts of the lake. We need some cooler water temperatures to get them schooled up again. We did catch a few on Joe Spaits Gold flutter spoon in 22 to 24 foot of water on old road beds.

A few more Crappies were being caught week. But again there are scattered out. The good old minnow rig worked the best around the 515 bridges. A few were being caught on brush piles but not many.
The Catfish fishing remained good this week. The best water depth was 18 to 24 foot of water around baited trees. Punch bait still was the preferred bait this week.

The Big Bass Splash is getting close. You need to stop into Lake Fork Marina tackle shop and get a fresh supply of Zoom products and Strike King crankbaits. While you are there make sure you pick up plenty of water to stay hydrated with. Oh yes, don’t forget to get your new fishing license!
Speaking of the Big Bass Splash, I still have a couple of days open for guide Bass trips to get you ready for the tournament. I do ½ day and full day trips. So give us a call at (903) 413-6919 or E-mail us at [email protected] . Have a great fishing week and keep a tight line.

Lake Fork

Fishing Report from TPWD (May 1)

GOOD. Water Stained; 60 degrees; 0.67 feet above pool. Lake Fork flood gates are open which can make the bite tough. The best bite has been on shaky heads and Carolina rigs on main lake points and secondary points in 5-8 feet of water. Squarebill crankbaits are catching a few in the same areas. Frog bite is slow over flooded grass. Yum dingers are fair at the edge of the grass 2-4 feet. Report by Marc Mitchell, Lake Fork Guide Service. Report by Guide Alex Guthrie, Fly Fish Fork Guide Service. The crappie fishing on Lake Fork has been great this week if you find the right areas and patterns to fish. The spawn is coming to an end and the black crappie are beginning to load up on certain bridges and docks. If you search you can find some big schools of keeper size black crappie. We have had to battle heavy rains, terrible winds and even thunderstorms lately a lot. Hopefully we will see more stable weather conditions over the next few weeks. You can still find some larger white crappie on timber in 10-22ft. Also seeing some white crappie loading up on certain brush in some areas close to where they spawned. Jigs and minnows are both producing well right now and should stay the same until around June or July. Catfishing is still hot on Lake Fork. Baited holes in 12-20ft along creek channels are doing great for channel cats. Use cattle cubes or sour grain to get them to hold in one spot. Then use any prepared catfish bait or cut shad to load the boat with eater sized catfish. Report by Jacky Wiggins, Jacky Wiggins Guide Service.
