April Update from The Well Armed Woman

The Lake Fork Chapter of The Well Armed Woman met April 6, 2017 at their regular location of J&K’s Trigger and Bow Shooting Sports range on FM 154 south of Sulphur Springs, Texas.
Those that came for shooting at 4:00pm enjoyed a variety of targets. Several worked on their NRA Winchester Challenge to earn their next level of rockers. The weather was great for shooting…no wind or heat to deal with!
The meeting hour welcomed 20 regular members. Two members were awarded Distinguished Expert medals, certificates and pins for their accomplishments in the NRA Winchester Challenge for Pistol. Next month we have the honor of awarding Distinguished Expert medals and certificates for Defensive Pistol! Many are working on levels toward their awards as well. Congratulations ladies! And keep up the good work!!
The USCCA Expo at the Fort Worth Convention Center was held 7-9 April. (United States Concealed Carry Association – USCCA) Our founder Carrie Lightfoot was on a panel of 6 ladies discussing a variety of issues. Six Lake Fork Chapter members attended on Saturday the 8th to hear the panel and meet Carrie. She was so appreciative that we all came wearing our purple shirts!
The meeting topic of Fundamentals of Shooting was presented by Peggy York. No matter how often these items are discussed, they will not be learned without being practiced. Even if you can’t go to the range and shoot, you can practice at home “dry firing” and going through the fundamentals.
Our next meetings topic will be “Situational Awareness”. Come learn the levels of awareness and make and take home a reminder.
Mark your calendar for May 4th! We will shoot from 4-5:30pm and then go inside for the program from 6-7pm. Remember eye and ear protection are always required on the shooting line! Non-members are always welcome but you must be a member before you can shoot…it’s an insurance requirement. For more information contact Peggy York, Lake Fork Chapter Leader at 903-473-2185.

Fishing Report from TPWD (May 7)

GOOD. Water Stained; 73 degrees; 0.73 feet below pool. Good early morning bass bite around shad spawn areas and with topwater frogs over grass. Midday to mid afternoon work flukes and yum dingers around grass good1-3 feet. New wave of spawners pulling up this week. Carolina rigs fair in 5-10 feet of water on secondary points. Report by Marc Mitchell, Lake Fork Guide Service. Black bass are post spawn and the top water bite is on! Frog patterns are working in the shallow vegetation. The crappie are moving shallow, small clousers are producing well. Large bream have moved shallow, wooly buggers are producing good fish. Channel catfish are cruising 2-4 feet biting clousers. Report by Guide Alex Guthrie, Fly Fish Fork Guide Service. Crappie fishing is settling into the post spawn and summer patterns we should see for the next few months. We are seeing incredible numbers of small black crappie right now loading up on brush piles, lay downs, bridges and docks. The larger black crappie are a little hard to find but you can find some nice groups of them or pick a few out of the smaller fish. The bigger white crappie are beginning to load on the summer pattern trees. We have a tremendous amount of fry covering up a lot of those trees and making it very hard to see those bigger white crappie on forward facing sonar or for them to see your bait. You can find fish in 10-30 feet of water and some may only be 2 feet under the surface or right on the bottom. Minnows and any colored jigs are both producing extremely well. Report by Jacky Wiggins, Jacky Wiggins Guide Service.
